What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient technique that promotes your body’s natural healing process through the placement of thin, sterile, single use needles into precise acupuncture points. A patient’s signs and symptoms determine which points to use.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment. Clinical research continues to prove its validity and fuel it’s growth and acceptance. Acupuncture has none of the toxic side effects associated with pharmaceutical medications. It works best in a series of treatments.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese medicine, which consists primarily of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs, offers a unique approach to healing that nicely compliments other health care modalities.
Its been practiced for over 3000 years and is based on the principles of Qi flow, yin and yang, and the relationships of the five elements found in the body.
Chinese herbal medicine
Chinese herbal medicine is an important component of Chinese medicine. It is best used in conjunction with acupuncture treatments. It is used to expedite the healing process and strengthen, support and tonify the body.
Formulas have the capacity to address the underlying root cause of various medical conditions, whether acute or chronic. When prescribed and used correctly formulas rarely cause unwanted side effects.
Formulas are created by combining individual herbs to create a formula with a synergistic effect on the body. The combination of herbs increases the benefits and minimises any harmful side effects.
There are many classic formulas based on specific diagnosis, however the beauty of this herbal medicine is that it can be tailored to the individual’s needs by adding or removing herbs with specific actions.ng.
What is Cupping?
Cupping therapy is a method of deeply dredging stagnation out of channels of qi flow by using suction to pull or move stagnant fluids and blood out of an injured or sore area.
Glass cups are placed on the skin for 10-15 minutes to create the desired effect. Cupping reduces pain and relaxes tight painful muscles. It reinvigorates the healing processes which have stalled.
Cupping is good for
- Arthritic pain in the back
- Old muscular injuries with recurring painful flare-ups
- Overworked stiff sore muscles
- Asthmatic congestion
- Some forms of acne
- Tension Headaches
- Neck stiffness and soreness
What is Moxabustion?
Moxibustion (Moxa for short) therapy is the burning of an herb called Mugwort over specific acupoints or areas of the body.
It has a warming, moving and nourishing effect. Mugwort comes in many forms but the one I use in the clinic is compressed like a thick stick of incense.
